2019 Ram 1500 Powertrain Review and Towing Capacity
The new Ram 1500 is powered by your choice of three available engines that all offer their own flavor:
- 6L Pentastar® V6 with eTorque: 305 horsepower, 269 lb-ft of torque
- 7L HEMI® V8: 395 horsepower, 410 lb-ft of torque
- 7L HEMI® V8 with eTorque: 395 horsepower, 410 lb-ft of torque
The 3.6L Pentastar® engine has a maximum towing capacity of 7,730 pounds, while the 5.7L HEMI® engine can tow 11,610 pounds without eTorque and 12,750 pounds with eTorque.
Clearly, eTorque can make a big difference in this truck’s capability, but what is it? This is an innovative mild hybrid system that utilizes a Li-Ion battery and a 12Kw motor to supplement acceleration. This allows it to maximize power and capability without sacrificing efficiency.
All three engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission that optimizes shift changes for improved efficiency, performance, and drivability.
Payload and Cargo in the Ram 1500
As you can see from the powertrain, the 2019 Ram 1500 doesn’t shy away from hard work, and this is evident in its payload and cargo management capabilities, as well.
With a maximum payload capacity of 2,300 pounds when properly equipped, this truck has the ability carry a lot of weight on its shoulders. You can load that cargo into your choice of bed with varying cargo volumes:
- 5-Foot 7-Inch Cargo Bed: 9 cubic feet
- 6-Foot 4-Inch Cargo Bed: 5 cubic feet
In addition to what you can fit in your truck’s bed, you can pack smaller items into the available RamBox® Cargo Management System. These storage boxes are located above the wheels, so that they add cargo volume without taking away from what you can fit inside the truck bed.
The RamBox® Cargo Management System also includes a 115-volt power outlet so that you can store your tools on the way to site and then power them up when you get there.
High-Tech Cabin of the 2019 Ram 1500
Inside the cabin of the Ram 1500, you’ll find a high-tech control center that keeps you connected and plugged-in during your long hauls across town.
It features an available Uconnect® 12.0 system with Navigation. This comes with a 12-inch vertical touchscreen that gives you a large surface area for viewing turn-by-turn directions, smartphone apps via Android Auto™ or Apple CarPlay™, and audio streaming.
It also features split-screen capability so that you can adjust the temperature on the lower half of the screen while viewing your next turn or exit on the navigation system on the upper half of the screen.
The cabin also includes available wireless phone charging so that you can keep your devices energized and ready to go at all times, even if you forget to bring your charging cable with you.
