Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee? The Difference in Layman’s Terms

Brands often have what feels like 100 different variations on the same model. It can be difficult for those who aren’t in the know to know the difference.

While we won’t be breaking down quite so many, we will be talking about two of Jeep’s premier vehicles, the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. On a surface level, one would seem to be better than the other, hence the word “Grand” being in the title. But what exactly makes it so “grand?”

The first thing to know is that while the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee are both SUVs, they are in different classes. The Cherokee is a compact SUV and comes standard with a 2.4-liter I4 MultiAir engine. The Grand Cherokee, while similar in design, is a mid-size SUV, and comes with a more powerful 3.6-liter V6 engine.

The other thing to be aware of is price. More power equals a higher MSRP, and while the difference isn’t night and day, it is still something to consider. It’s all dependent on what you need out of your SUV.

If you want a family car that’s nice to take out for weekend day trips, the Cherokee is perfect for that. If you’re the more rugged type who likes to haul a small caravan with you on family getaways, then the Grand Cherokee is what you’re looking for.
